It's now several weeks past the fleet's usual mid-November departure. Last year the fleet didn't leave Yokohama until 2nd December…two weeks late. With its departure again delayed, tension is building globally: several websites are soliciting sightings of the Nisshin Maru factory ship, while live ship location sites are receiving increased hits.
Sea Shepherd is finishing preparations in several Australian ports for Operation Divine Wind. This year is expected to be its most dangerous campaign yet and, over the past several years, the nasty Nippons' response has grown more violent. In 2009 they went as far as using a LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Device) against SS's helicopter, an act of irresponsible stupidity which could have easily caused the pilot to lose control and crash. And last year's deliberate ramming of Ady Gil will never be forgotten. This year, the fleet's security has also had a multi-million dollar boost.
+ ...meanwhile Norway has harpooned efforts to recognise whaling as a threat to whales!
The Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) in Norway (representing 100+ countries) bowed to objections from Norway, one of the last three countries still commercially killing whales. Norway argued that CMS is not the correct forum for this issue. So over a hundred countries caved in to ONE??
In a draft resolution, commercial whaling was cited as a high threat to whales. But in the final version, although other substantial threats such as by-catch, pollution and feeding ground degradation were added, whaling was excluded by Norway.
So explosive-tipped steel slamming at high velocity into a whale is not considered a threat by the Norwegians? Would they consider a few more of their whaling ships sinking at their moorings...no threat to them either?? I'm curious as to which forum Norway considers the correct one to address this issue: please don't say the farcical Japanese-hijacked IWC...!!!
